Patch and Sara jumped right into this week’s topic, discussing Plato’s Myth of Er. Plato’s work covers one of Sara’s favorite topics, the Sacred Contract. Her purpose in life is to help other women manifest wealth and success. This week’s card is The Farther Gate, which covers taking the next step and evolving in life. Even though you don’t seem to be making progress now, keep moving forward, and you will be rewarded. So don’t hesitate!
Plato’s Myth of Er and Your Purpose
The Myth of Er appears in the last chapter of Plato’s Republic. Patch points out that the word “Myth” in Plato’s time meant something different than the falsehood we often associate it with. In fact, “myth” meant an absolute, unchanging truth.
The Myth of Er tells the story of a Greek soldier’s death. After his death, he returns to life in order to tell his friends about the afterlife. He saw people going into and out of doors in the sky and on the ground. People exiting the sky doors described spending 1,000 years in heavenly bliss. Those exiting the ground doors instead described spending 1,000 years in hellish torture.
The group was heading to meet with the three Sisters of Fate, who have everyone draw lots. Whomever drew the best lot could pick the life they would return to when reincarnated. Everyone else chose their new life, and was assigned a daemon, or genius spirit, to accompany them in life and help them stick to the path they chose while in the afterlife. Finally, they drink from the River of Forgetfulness in order to forget their afterlife experience, and are sent back to Earth to start a new chosen life.
Takeway – How to Know Your Purpose
Patch believes Plato’s story is a metaphor with the big takeaway that we all have a specific purpose in life, and we can know what it is. Our dreams are our daemons trying to educate us. Sara gives the example of popular singer Billie Eilish. She believes that Billie found her purpose early in life, and is living it out much younger than most people do. Not everyone is destined to be a rich and famous singer, but we all have important roles to fulfill. In her afterlife, Billie chose singing and songwriting. However, you may have chosen something else. Regardless, it is something that you love to do. When you find out what it is, you will start helping others to do the same.
