Patch started this week’s episode by giving a background of Carl Jung’s brief stint working with Sigmund Freud and their work using word association. Sara had to interject so they wouldn’t skip their starting ritual of drawing a tarot card for guidance. This week, Sara drew the Wild Boar from the Animal Medicine oracle cards. Wild Boar teaches us to confront lies without fear. This is a crucial step toward decoding our dreams.
Word Association Explained
Patch cautioned that word association is not for everyone. It may not be appropriate for those with language related neuroses, as well as people with deep mental blocks regarding certain words. He then started a round of word association with Sara providing the responses, explaining the nuances of the process as they went. Psychotherapists can learn a lot from this exercise. The words the patient provides opposite words for, as well as the words that take the patient awhile to respond to, provide clues to their state.
Word Association in Dream Analysis
How does word association apply to dream interpretation? Patch strongly recommends the method of writing dreams down. Each detail in the story is important. Then, break it down into the verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs used. After listing the parts of speech, you should then take time to make a word association for each word. For example, does the word “blue” make you think of the sky? Sometimes even homonyms can make sense. Think about which words provide an emotional charge for you. When you go deep to understand these elements, you can gain clarity about the symbols your subconscious self is sending you. Ask yourself what actions you must take, for example, if your dream reveals negative association with a person. How do you overcome complexes or conflicts? If you feel judged by someone else, are you actually judging yourself internally?
Finally, Sara closes out the episode by turning the tables and playing a speed round of word association with Patch. Let’s just say, it was very revealing!

More about Patch and Sara
Patch and Sara Drury have teamed up in order to assist you in tapping into your own inner wisdom through learning the language of dreams.
Patch is fluent in dream language. He has studied story, mythology, and archetypal imagery for years. This is how our dreams communicate with us. One of his deep-set skills, or superpowers, is translating the imagery and metaphors of dreams. Then, we can make sense of what messages they have for us. But wisdom unapplied is like a TV playing in the background. It’s just noise.
Sara’s superpower is seeing people’s blind spots and then helping them to move past them quickly. She helps dreamers understand HOW to take the guidance and wisdom they receive and implement it in their waking life to co-create their desired reality. She helps people reach new levels of both personal and spiritual expansion.
