In this episode, Patch and Sara get all foundational and talk about the subconscious mind. It is both a place that dreams originate from, and also a guiding factor in the quality and content of your life. Sara even pulls back the curtain to reveal a little of her origin story as it relates to her work with the subconscious. Put those earbuds in and get ready for a crash course in where your dreams come from!
Subconscious Mind 101
First, as is customary, Sara pulls from the Shaman’s Dream Oracle card deck. She pulls the Sky Bridge (Possibility for Union) card, which turns out to be an appropriate card for this show. The card paints a scene where the reader is at a crossroads in life, where there is only one good option – to take a leap of faith to move forward. Once you take the first step, the rest will become obvious.
The Sky Bridge card is perfect to describe Sara’s journey, as well as the one she helps her clients take. In this scenario, one has done the growth work, but has to make the leap to truly make progress. Dreams can inform us with the knowledge to understand what that means for us. Listen carefully, since what you seek is also seeking you!
Patch responds by recounting the story of when King Arthur and his knights saw the vision of the Holy Grail. They knew that this was the quest they should set out on, so they got to work seeking it out. When they reached a dark forest, they knew they had to each seek out the darkest path before they knew what direction to take next.
Misconceptions About The Subconscious Mind
Sara points out that the subconscious rules over every aspect of our lives. An example Patch points out is that we may be programmed as kids to shy away from the accumulation of wealth, since the Bible teaches that the love of money is the root of all evil. These blocks can be difficult to overcome when we grow up. Your subconscious may be steering you to money making opportunities, but your innate guilt can hinder you from choosing it. Sara also recalled how her mother always told her how beautiful she was growing up, yet complained about her own body image. Her mother’s negative self talk formed Sara’s body image to be negative later in life, instead of the compliments that she showered her with.
Patch goes on to share a metaphor from Joseph Campbell. Think of yourself as a house. Your conscious mind works in your waking life, which happens in the upstairs. It’s a well lit area where most of your everyday activity takes place. Your subconscious mind works in the basement. The basement is dark, full of forgotten items, and you don’t visit it very often. When you are dreaming, you go to the basement to do important tasks, which Patch compares to changing fuses, or getting wrapping paper for Christmas. Your subconscious mind invites you via your dreams to find fulfillment in life by balancing both floors of the house.
Tools To Connect With Your Subconscious
If the subconscious mind rules us, seeking to understand it should be our top priority. Sara brings up three tools we can use.
- Shadow Work Your subconscious is essentially your shadow. Get out of the conscious box. Be brave, and take a trip to the basement and look at the beliefs that are no longer serving you. Stream of Thought Journaling is a great way to do this. Pay attention to your dreams and consider the parts of you that may be repressed.
- Dream Work This is one of the most powerful ways to connect with your subconscious mind. Your subconscious is connected to the superconscious. The time we are most connected to it is while we sleep. Our dreams are the quickest way for the subconscious to communicate with us, so journal the details you can remember about your dreams. As you make this a regular habit, you will get better at it and learn more as you go.
- Hypnosis When you are hypnotized you “dream on purpose”. You can lead your dreams to where you want them to go. Go to the basement, find the items that you no longer need and get rid of them. Find useful items that can help you gain clarity and apply the dream’s message to your life.
Sara closes out by recommending the book The Genie Within. For years, Sara has used it as a reference to better connect with her subconscious mind.

Patch is fluent in dream language. He has studied story and mythology, as well as archetypal imagery for years. This is how our dreams communicate with us. Sara’s superpower is seeing people’s blind spots and then helping them to move past them quickly.
