This week, the podcast gets personal. Patch and Sara are here specifically to decode a bad dream their son Jack Henry recently had. When kids have nightmares, it can be heart wrenching for parents to discuss, and this is no exception. It’s especially tough when the parents inspired the dream in some way.
When Kids Have Nightmares – Jack Henry’s Bad Dream
Sara started off by mentioning Robert Moss’s book Dreamgates. It inspired her family to incorporate stories of the previous night’s dreams at the breakfast table. Like many people, Sara aks Jack Henry what he dreamed the night before right when she wakes him up. It can often be a positive experience. When kids have nightmares though, it’s usually not.
Jack’s bad dream started with him downstairs in their house. He looked out the window, and he saw what he described as “wind tornados”. JH was very specific that they were not Sharknados or Firenados. The family went to the bathroom to huddle up safely. Before Jack Henry joined his mom and dad in the bathroom, he grabbed a pillow so he would be comfortable.
How Should Parents React When Kids Have Nightmares?
When his son woke up from this bad dream, Patch asked him what he thought about tornados in general. JH responded that they scare him. Of course, this represents something chaotic in his life that he has no control over. Patch asked for some examples, and Jack Henry almost immediately said, “When you and Mommy fight.”
As with any relationship, Patch and Sara sometimes have disagreements. Our hosts discussed how each of them responded to conflict. Ever since Jack was young, he would respond to his parents’ arguments by yelling at them to stop. Jack, a Libra, is very concerned with things being orderly and balanced. When his parents fight, Jack Henry gets scared that they will break up. Although the couple is in no danger of divorce, JH knows that Patch was divorced in the past. Perhaps this fuels his concern.
Unlike Sara, who is through with an ordeal after her emotional response builds up, Jack tends to stew on it by himself. This is not necessarily bad, as Patch explained that dreams always bring us new information. Introducing the pillow into the room was Jack’s subconscious telling him he needs to find a way to cope when his parents fight. In order to feel secure, Jack may need to find a place by himself away from the fight and cuddle with a favorite stuffed animal or blanket. After the fight is over, his parents can explain their disagreement in a language he understands before reassuring him they are not breaking up after all.
When kids have nightmares, we have an opportunity to help them find healthy coping mechanisms. We also have a chance to look within and ask ourselves how we can make their conscious existences better.
