Our listener writes in describing a dream set in a creepy old house alongside a strange girl. They come to a closed door, which gave off frightening vibes. Suddenly, a witch appeared, and the listener ran as fast as possible, leaving the unknown girl inside. This drew criticism from onlookers outside. He hid from the people under a pile of hay, until two large gorillas founder her and started to attack him.
Patch Breaks Down The Dream – Emotional
Sara and Patch both were impressed with the narrative flow of this dream. Patch instantly knew how he should approach its interpretation. Creepy indoor structures often represent our psyches, which are our mental structures, when found in dreams. The young female stranger stands in for the listener’s feminine side, which perhaps include emotions he is not comfortable with expressing. What about the foreboding door? It represents the unknown parts of himself, which he perceives as unsafe to explore. Very scary witches sometimes also play the part of feminine traits which men often reject. Thus, he runs away as fast as he can, leaving the witch behind. His detractors may embody the people around him who criticize his inability to deal with his emotional state.
Patch then pivots to the perplexing element of the hay that the dreamer hides underneath. Our host happens to have worked with this gentleman in the past, and knows he is very wealthy. Hay is harvested grass. Therefore, it can be safely interpreted that the hay represents his efforts to comfort himself with the money he has earned. Could it insulate him from his critics’ words? The two gorillas would then accost him. What could the gorillas mean? Gorillas are primal versions of humans. Even though his money may have spared him from the court of public opinion, his primal self is attacking him for not acknowledging his basic emotional feelings.
Conclusion – Emotional Conflict Dream Resolution
Patch and Sara discuss the paradox wherein we must not derive all our self worth from others’ opinions, yet we need a tribe in order to survive. Finally, they conclude that the protagonist could help himself by retelling the dream from the perspectives of the other characters in the dream. The mob, the witch, and the strange little girl could help him better understand the message of the dream if he saw it through their eyes. Patch also suggests writing down the events of the dream and concluding the story. Since it ended in the middle of the gorilla beatdown, nothing was resolved. Writing out potential endings could possibly give clues toward the dream’s meaning.
