Sara’s Theory of Divination Based on Tarot Cards
At Patch’s request, Sara drew an oracle card from her deck. However, she was not allowed to read the stock description assigned to the card. Rather, she had to come up with her own interpretation based on the face of the card. Then, Patch would explain his theory on divination based on her response.
Sara drew the Farther Gate – Bold Step Forward card. It showed an open iron gate in the foreground. Behind it, rays of light shine from above through a mountain range on either side. Also, behind the rocks lies a second, mystery light source. In the near distance stands another gate, which is closed. Sara believed this card encourages us to take a step out in faith, despite not knowing what is on the other side of the far gate. We must trust that there will be a light guiding us beyond the near side light.
Patch’s Approach to Divination
Patch’s take on divination via this card goes a step forward. Based on Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth, aka the Hero’s Journey. The first step in the journey is stepping out through the first gate. When that happens, you begin the “hero work” of accomplishing your goal. This step is called initiation. You will then face the obstacles to meet that ultimate goal. Once you have slain the “dragon” and found the “treasure”, you must go through the next gate and share your victory spoils with others.
While Sara reads the White Book interpretation of tarot card meanings each week, Patch approaches divination differently. He prefers to avoid the author’s written meaning, and rely on his own take instead. When he does this, he feels that he is much more likely to learn from his subconscious.
Science can identify the existence of a subconscious, but it can not interpret dreams and find their meaning. This is where different forms of divination come in. Forms other than oracle cards include automatic writing, pendulum work, casting runes, drawing random cut up words from a hat, and the I-Ching. Whatever approach you use for interpreting dreams, Patch and Sara agree that divination is a great route to go. If you are not asking what you should be doing differently, and taking action based on that, then you will not make progress.
